James Madison: The Father of the Constitution

James MadisonJames Madison and the Welfare Clause.

James Madison (1751-1836) was the fourth (1809-1817) president of the United States. While only five-feet four-inches in height in life, in United States history he was twenty feet tall. In 1787 James Madison wrote the Constitution of the United States. Let me repeat that again for anyone who was not paying attention – in 1787 James Madison wrote the Constitution of the United States. In 1789 James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights. James Madison was one of the two principal authors of the Federalist Papers (the other being Alexander Hamilton) which explain the U.S. Constitution. James Madison wrote voluminously about the U.S. Constitution his entire life and was the last living signor of the U.S. Constitution, dying in 1836. James Madison is rightly and properly called the Father of the Constitution.

Article I Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states, “The Congress shall have Power To … provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;” This is the last bastion of the Socialist (i.e. Democratic) Party when they pass their socialist legislation – we are providing for the general welfare.

James Madison penned the words “general Welfare” and it is instructive to see what he meant by those words and how his meaning has been twisted by the people in power in an attempt to justify their intrusion into the lives of American citizens. I have provided some translations for those who enjoy such things. All the quotations below are by James Madison.

“With respect to the two words “general welfare” I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators. If the words obtained so readily a place in the “Articles of Confederation” and received so little notice in their admission into the present Constitution, and retained for so long a time a silent place in both, the fairest explanation is, that the words, in the alternative of meaning nothing or meaning everything, had the former taken for granted.” (Translation: If you have not been given the power to do something, you cannot use “general welfare” as a justification for doing it. This is not the intention of these words.)

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” (Translation: Just because you feel sorry for someone, the federal government has no authority to help him).

“The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of government.” (Translation: Just because you feel sorry for someone, the federal government has no authority to help him).

“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one … ” (Translation: Once you start spending money willy-nilly to promote the general welfare you have destroyed the entire concept of limited government.)

“As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights. Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties, or his possessions.” (Translation: When the government gets too big you will lose your freedom.)

“There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” (Translation: Eighty-eight years of gradual socialism is much more dangerous than any sudden usurpation which may be required to address the eighty-eight years of gradual socialism.)

“The powers of the federal government are enumerated; it can only operate in certain cases; it has legislative powers on defined and limited objects, beyond which it cannot extend its jurisdiction.” (Translation: Read Article I Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution <the enumerated powers> and the Tenth Amendment if you haven’t grasped them yet.)

This information on the Welfare Clause has been documented in some previous posts but it is so important it bears repeating.

  1. I enjoy posts such as this. Obama was supposedly a constitutional professor, but his lectures must have been, ‘Do whatever you want, then justify it with the Welfare Clause.’

I especially like it when the Founding Fathers are quoted, but it would be very helpful if specific works and references were cited.

  2. When did things turn so bad for a great nation. How have we strayed so far from the constitution which I and so many consider a wonderfully written inspiration by a true patriot.

    • Hardcore, sixties.. While they lulled us to sleep with games, football, television, junk music, and our colleges. Blinding us.

      • Yes sirs and madams…
You are correct. The morals of mankind have so deteriorated that we have become oblivious to the slow, subtle sneakiness of satan sliming his way into our fabric..into our hearts. It is the love of money that lures our weaknesses into its throes. Which IS satan! It is the lust of our hearts which entices our natural man\woman into infidelities…and it isn’t always sexual seductions! We have become corrupt, stained, fallen…due to our very own lusts of the flesh. ITS THE truth, and if we’re being WHOLLY honest, we will admit it.
THIS, my compatriots, is why I’m pretty sure that AMERICA is falling into the hands of ISLAM!!!!
But thank GOD for our LORD, our mediator, our SAVIOR!
Let us please pray and BE FAITHFUL to our CREATOR…UNTIL DEATH! I know I do. I will. I am!
But I am not spotless. I am a sinner. Thank GOD for HIS SON, my REDEEMER! Oh, yes, HE knows the heart of man!
I’m joining this U.S.Freedomarmy. IF IT BE THE LORD’s WILL..OR SHOULD IT NOT…. SO SHALL EITHER ONE BE.
        In Christ,

      • So true we have been blinded by our schools we have been distracted by mindless tv games etc. Mostly our schools have stopped teachings the constitution and it’s meaning.while asleep government took over

    • About the time of Woodrow Wilson and about WWI. Go to JBS.ORG, they have a great library in their archives that will educate you about how this has all come about and what they are doing to fight it. Of course they are on the government’s hit list, because they don’t “go along to get along”

    • The power of the government and yhe people was lost after the passage of the Federal Reserve Act

The power to print currency was given to a group of private individuals who’s agenda is not compatible with the public welfare.

      T. Jefferson said this:
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks will deprive The People of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to The People, to whom it properly belongs”

    • The silent majority went SILENT. Busy with working jobs, raising families, being good citizens in general, they let the left grow in power in DC and locally. We have been awakened by the corruption, the evil, the hypocrisy of the left FINALLY and may we never again be caught sleeping.

  3. What happened to Faith sustaining us? God is still in Heaven…I agree we need to put up a wall in Mexico, Cuba & Colombia. I don’t see LGBT rights in the Constitution.

  4. I’m glad to beat a Patriot,I will defend your Country to to the death,”DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR”.no greater love than this then a man lay down his life for a friend,SEMPER FI

    • Thank you helping to keep my family safe.
My son was a Marine father Army fatherinlaw Army.I am a Army brat.Ex was Navy. My entire famly has served in one of our military’s since before I was around and I will be 64 next week.
Also thank your family for me as well. They also sacrifice as well and are hardly ever thanked for their service to this country.
So once again Thank You for your service..

  5. The very first step in weakening the Constitution came from a desire to impose “order”. What is considered orderly varies so widely from one individual to another that it had to be imposed by the will of a majority. The “will of the majority” is a democratic mechanism used by demagogues to impose restrictions on behaviors deemed to be tawdry or undesirable. That those behaviors are, in fact, undesirable to a large number of people doesn’t mean that there is authority to prohibit them. When individuals are no longer able to make foolish or self-destructive choices, they are diminished in stature under the law. Then, it only becomes a matter of the judgment of the majority over which behaviors to sanctions. In the case of the socialists, it is engaging in free enterprise. Had individuals retained their status as the primary unit of our Republic, they could have no such power. But, having established that “society as a whole” is greater than the rights of individuals, they were able to leverage in their policies. The only counter-measure that can stop this is to elevate individuals to their former original status of having complete control of their personal and property within the boundaries of mutual respect for the rights of others.

    • A certain number of Illuminati need to be killed off. They run the world and USA like puppets. We can argue to the cows come home, with each other, but when you go up against 500 trillion dollar family like the Rothschilds, WE HAVE NO CHANCE! Get to the root of the problems, not cosmetic, lip service!

      • I agree that it looks like it may come to bloodshed in the not too far off future. It appears that some of the punks for hire are perfectly willing to shed blood and destroy property. It mY take another civil war. But I think to give Trump a chance to turn things around first. There is still much we can do to help our cause (ie. Writing letters, protesting, showing our support, etc.) Personally I think that things have gone too far to be peacefully resolved, but I will give peace one last chance.

  6. I’ve had some Interesting discussions with the JBS; those folks that ally themselves with b. HUSSEIN o. and his Action Network; and those that call themselves “Indivisibles”. All three of these organizations are funded by George Soros/Koch Brothers &/or the so-called “shadow govt.” They are ANTI- The US Constitution.

These discussions got heated pretty quickly when they found out that I was a volunteer with the Convention of States Project here in Texas.

These folks really only “know” what they have been told. They’ve never researched much of anything. They are being groomed to oppose anyone that stands up for The Truth, either in the form of The US Constitution or God’s “word.”

Anyone that intends to defend either of the two Verifiable forms of The Truth, identified above, with those groups that differ in their opinions, had best be both “prayed up” & studied up. Otherwise, it won’t solve much.

We want them to learn the truth. That’s why I’VE taken this stance: I am no longer a Republican. I state that I am an American Citizen and a Native Resident of the Great State of Texas. That takes politics off of the table.

I’m an enlistee in The United States Freedom Army, 5th Army Div., NE Texas.
